When the Veteran dies, is the spouse and child(ren) eligible for additional benefits?
If the veteran was a former POW rated totally disabled for not less than one year prior to his/her death, was receiving 100% service-connected compensation for 10 years prior to his/her death, died as a result of the service-connected compensation, or died while on active duty, the spouse and dependent children may be eligible for a monthly benefit, along with a $2000 burial allowance. If the veteran was receiving a non-service-connected pension or receiving no benefits at all, the widow of a wartime veteran could receive a widow s pension. This widow’s pension has an income limit of $567 per month and like the veterans pension, all income would be subtracted from that income limit. The difference between the income limit and all other income received, would be the amount of the widow’s monthly VA pension.
