It broke in two at the surface. The two sections of the wreck: the bow and the stern, are laying on the ocean floor almost 2,000 feet apart and facing in different directions. So obviously the strong evidence supports a surface separation. Never mind the testimony (largely ignored by the American and British press, and their respective inquiries) that several survivors saw with their own eyes, Titanic breaking in two at the surface.
