When Talking About Rivers, What Does The Term Braiding Mean?
A river is said to be braided when a group of small islands called braid bars are formed and the main river channel gets separated by a network or a chain of smaller channels which flow around these braid bars. Braided sections of rivers are caused by fluctuations in the current of the river, and that is the main reason for the rapid change in the number and location of the braid bars in a braided system. Braided channels are formed because of the following three reasons, namely, erodible river banks, rapid and frequent changes in the discharge of the stream, and the abundant supply of sediment. Modern rivers are either frequently channelised in another direction, or a dam is built around the river in order to channelise the river.
