When sorting by date ascending, can new messages push themselves into view?

When I sort my inbox descending by date, new messages appear at the top of the list and push themselves into view, which is great. However, when I sort my inbox ascending by date, new message no longer push themselves into view. . . the scroll bar gets longer and the messages appear below where I can see them. I prefer to sort ascending by date so I can read my mail in the order in which it arrives. I am using Thunderbird version 2.0.0.19.
