When should you consider placing and elderly parent in a nusing home?
If you worry about a parent’s health and welfare whenever you leave that parent alone…
it’s probably time for intervention.
Answer these four questions honestly:
- Is this parent in danger? For example: Do they do things like leave the stove on?
- Does the parent have frequent falls?
- Are there episodes of increased forgetfulness and confusion?
- Is the parent incontinent (urinating or soiling themselves) and unable to clean themselves properly?
If you have answered "Yes" to any of these questions, talk to the doctor about placement options. Nursing homes assist those with physical or mental health needs.
Age isn’t always a factor in nursing home placements. Sometimes home health assistance is all that’s needed. Adult day care can be helpful. And assisted living is becoming a popular alternative to leaving an aging parent home alone.
