When should we switch from puppy chow to adult dog food?
The lab is considered a large breed dog and they don’t reach full maturity until 15 months old. Although they might look like they are full grown, their bones, muscles and organs haven’t stopped growing. Puppy food has higher levels of protein and fat which is needed to assist in the development of their bodies. Although a lot of Vets recommend Adult food once a dog has been neutered/spayed because they are concerned about weight gain, it is still really important to continue to feed puppy formulas. If you see weight gain just back off on the amount being fed. Also I would encourage you to consider upgrading the food when you switch over to the adult formula. A large breed dog has different nutritional needs than a small or medium dog (think of the difference between a bodybuilder and a marathon runner’s nutritional requirements as an example).
