When should the combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) be restarted in women who are not breastfeeding?
Women who are not breastfeeding, and have no contraindication, may start the oral contraceptive three to four weeks after delivery. This allows sufficient time for normalization of clotting factors that were elevated during pregnancy while affording contraception before ovulation resumes. Women should not wait until resumption of their menses to restart the combined OCP as the first ovulation often precedes the first menses.
