When should the adolescent dose of Adacel® be administered?
Adacel® is the recommended vaccine for adolescents who require a tetanus and diphtheria booster (the vaccine also provides a pertussis booster). It should be administered 10 years after the pre-school Quadracel®. The interval between the vaccines should be no more than 10 years and may be as early as 9.5 years. If adolescents have already had a Td booster, then the Adacel® dose may still be given as long as at least 5 years have passed. All clinical encounters are opportunities to review a patient’s immunization status, and when indicated, to administer needed vaccines (Canadian Immunization Guide, page 24, Guideline 3).
