When should phonic instruction begin?
A. To insure that the emergent reader will begin to integrate all three cuing systems from the onset, systematic phonic instruction should be an integral, requisite part of reading readiness instruction. It should begin when an emergent reader is developmentally ready to attend to any one or all of the following readiness activities: 1. Listen to and comprehend age appropriate stories. 2. Follow European print style. 3. Understand that words talk. 4. Understand that clusters of letters with spaces between represent words. 5. Visually and auditorially discriminate between letters and sounds.
