When should i go to the doctor after finding out im pregnant?

They say to go right away…I, however, didn’t….I was just really nervous and scared – I mean I wanted a baby, but I have never been through it before, and was worried about it, so when I was around 11 weeks I made an appointment – now before I did that, I did get on vitamins…make sure they have 400gms of folic acid – very important!! So, anyways, go ahead and call on Monday, and they will set you up an appointment – you probably won’t get in right away…. I had my ultrasound at 20 weeks – my doctor only does one unless something is wrong…….

I went to my doctor as soon as I found out as I previously had mentioned to him we were trying for advice and he told me to come in and see him as soon as we get pregnant as it can take a while to get an appointment with the midwife in my area. Plus it also allowed me to ask him loads of silly questions and put my mind at rest. I dont think you get your first scan until 12 weeks which is a dating scan to determine exactly how far along you are and give you a more accurate due date (although your doctor will give you an estimated one based on the date of your last period). I know friends who had had early scans but this is because they were bleeding and it was to check everything was ok.

There’s no immediate rush, but go sooner rather than later- they’ll need to get you onto the “system” as pregnant and pass your care over to the midwife (in UK). Also here in UK the first scan is aroud 12 weeks. It differs in different countries though so is helpful if you could say where you live.
