When prompted to change my password, I keep trying to type in my new password but it keeps telling me that I have not completed the task. What is wrong?

You have to enter your new password twice. Be sure that all the password conditions are met (6-12 characters long; no special characters; at least 1 letter and 1 number). Also, at the same prompt password screen, users also have to enter e-mail addresses twice.
