When Prince Edward did his Marine training was he the bottom of his class?
Yes, most regrettably, Prince Edward was the bottom of his class when he did his Marine training. I believe I read somewhere that the entire embarrassing problem of Prince Edward and the Royal Marines arose over a misunderstanding on the Prince’s part. He was thinking, according to what I read…which may or may not be true…. that “going Commando” had to do with underwear. The Royal Marines, as you well know, are a very exclusive group of individuals. Prince Edward, although quite gifted in the area of the “arts” and “film”, clearly lacked the qualifications to excel in such a group. It was a dreadful public relations mistake to put him in the position of trying to excel in an area where he (and most of us) are simply not fundamentally equipped with the skills and personal attributes to succeed. It might have been better to have him serve a bit of time in another branch of the Armed Forces….and not in the most elite one that very few are qualified to serve in.
