THe key word is “SHOULD” not MUST. It is a very good idea to tell everyone what kind of ball you are playing. Here’s what happened in a tournament a couple of years back. Two players hit their tee shots down the middle of the fairway. When they got to their balls they realized they were the same brand and number. Under the rules both balls were declared “lost” since neither player could identify their ball. They both walked back to the tee and hit their third shots. You are asking for problems if you don’t mark your balls. It’s just courteous to tell everyone what you are playing. It is really helpful when you have trouble finding your ball.
