You can use any soil for planting, but you’ll get more of some types dissolving into your water. A clay based soil seems to be about the best, or you can buy ‘special’ pond plant potting soil, which is probably just a mix of clay soil, in my opinion. Nutrients that get into your water will feed the growth of Algae etc, and so is best avoided. Hope this helps. Good luck!
