None of the both. In MPFI engines Fuel in injected during suction stroke , When air stream is passing through the inlet manifold fuel start injected and mixes with the air passing .

*Spark Ignition Engine is Petrol Engine. Here During Suction Stroke “Petrol and Air” mixture is sucked through a carburetor. Then Compresion searts. Just before the end of compression Spark Plug produces a spark and ignites the “Petrol and Air” mixture. And so “Power Stroke”. * Compression Ignition Engine is Diesel Engine. Here there are no carburetors and spark plugs. Air alone is compressed and air temperature is increased. This temperature is enough to ignite the diesel injected Just before the end of compression. And so “Power Stroke”. Petrol Engine – carburetor – Petrol + Air – Suction – Compression – Spark – Power.- Exhaust. Diesel Engine – Air – Suction – Compression – Diesel injection thro’ pump and injector – Power – Exhaust.

if there was no fuel in the cylinder before compression… then you’d just be compressing air..

Before, at the intake stroke. And it’s not “petrol,” ya lousy Brit.
