When people give tithes and offering to a church, where does that money go?
I was a church Treasurer. Church’s are not taxed on the offerings and gifts they recieve if they are non-profit. They do not file Tax returns on the money they recieve. Church’s do keep tract of the donations however for people who want to deduct their gifts on their own personal taxes. Church’s are however required to pay taxes on their employees. Church’s are required to file taxes on people who work for the church and get a salary. The Pastor is exempt by Law to have taxes taken from his salary but the minister pays a self employment Tax. Money given goes to those the Church pays salaries to. Pastor, Secretary, Maintenance if applicable, for pulpit supply where another minister preaches while the current minister is gone, sometimes Song leader if a professional, janitor. Expenses for the Church to run, Light bill, gas bill, phone bill, materials for church such as Sunday school literature, bulletins, cleaning supplies, bathroom and kitchen supplies.
