When Paul said to “hold fast” on his words that he preached, didn that authorize Sola Scriptura?
The hand springs of some folks to get to their conviction, no matter what’s actually out there, just never ceases to amaze me. There was not any scripture of the type you’re talking about when Paul wrote those words. That is, assuming he wrote them at all. Furthermore, the text says that the recipient should hod fast to the words which he heard from Paul. This, to me, suggests the verbal teachings that Paul imparted. If the recipient actually was Timothy, then we can assume that Paul is referring to the many varied conversations that must have taken place between new convert and teacher. In the following verse, we read Paul saying that the recipient should “Guard the rich deposit of faith with the help of the Holy spirit who dwells within us.” This seems to refer to the faith indwelling each of the faithful, and this conclusion is somewhat the more strengthened by the following text, in which Paul pours rich praise on Onesiphorus for his positive actions to assist Paul.
