You can try running boxes in your home directory or placing symbolic links in /tmp that point to boxes and the cow1 file in your home, but it probably won’t work: boxes seems to crash if it needs to access any AFS directories. The easiest solution is probably just to backup everything in your home directory and then copy it back to /tmp when it gets erased.
