When my long game is going really well – why can I play my short game well?
The problem with most of the other answers is that they do not understand that you play your short game well as long as your long game is not so well. I too have that problem sometimes. In my case, it is because I really have to work to get my long game better. I used to have a really bad slice and worked hard to correct it. The problem there was that I worked and worked on my long game and my short game not only didn’t get worked as much, but working my long game so much changed my swing for my short game. You have to find a happy medium in your practice routines for both. The other thing is that when I hit a really good drive, I am playing a shot that I am not as used to. For example, if I hit a good drive and it goes 280- 300 yards, I use a sand wedge for my approach shot. Conversely, if I hit a bad drive offline and short, I may be hitting an 8-iron to the green.
