When it comes to college algebra, who truly needs it?
Whether you ever realize it or not, chances are math is the most important thing you’ll take in college. Even if you truly did never use it, It teaches a method of thought that is absolutely invaluable. It teaches the ability to think several steps ahead, critically, evaluating trends and recognizing patterns. The education you gain from math classes goes far beyond obtaining the ability to do math. For me, knowing how to do math is important because I’d like to understand how things work. Math is everywhere — it’s the language of nature, economics, and even sociological patterns. How useful knowing math is will vary from person to person, but taking math classes is extremely valuable for everyone. Training methods of thought is exactly why many engineers go on to business, or become day traders — they are good at planning, decision making, and recognizing patterns due to the training in problem solving received from mathematics.
