There are laws and regulations relating to broadcast programmes. If a programme or advert breaks those rules only one person needs to complain for the complaint to be upheld. However, I think I agree that there are problems. I think there are a couple of issues: 1. People who complain about a show they didn’t actually see or hear. They read about it two weeks later when the Daily Mail picks up on the story and then write in about. Whilst, hopefully the complaints are only upheld by regulators if they are valid, the publicity the press generates is often counter productive. In order to avoid the negative PR broadcasters are becoming increasingly timid just in case they offend the Mail. 2. The obsession in the regulations about trivialities. The regulators have sat by and done s*d all on the misleading advertising of broadband Internet (adverts such as “up to 8Mbps” should be banned).
