The Komen Race for the Cure is an event designed to promote positive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer. It has been an effective way to reach many women and men with the message that breast cancer is not necessarily fatal if mammography and breast self-exam become routine. As well as being a road race for runners, the Komen Race for the Cure is an emotionally charged event that attracts many first-time and recreational runners. Up to 75 percent of the funds raised at the race stay in Milwaukee to provide breast health research, diagnostics, screening, treatment, services and education for uninsured or underinsured women. The remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer. WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009. Registration at 7 a.m. and race at 9 a.m. WHERE: Milwaukee’s Lakefront PHONE: 414-805-2900 Sources: http://www.wisn.com/aboutwisn12/19538327/d
