After weeks of rampant speculation, wild rumors and unconfirmed sightings, as well as the leaking of grainy photos and shaky video footage, Sony has finally revealed the truth: Bigfoot does, in fact, exist. Sorry. What I meant to say is that Sony today revealed that the PlayStation 3 Slim exists. And consumers will be able to buy the new(ish) game console — a PS3 that comes with a thinner, lighter shape and a 120-gigabyte hard drive — for $299, which is a whopping $100 less than the PS3 has been previously priced at. During a press conference in advance of the GamesCom video-game convention in Cologne, Germany, Sony executives announced that the PlayStation 3 Slim will be available worldwide starting Sept. 1 and that the company will also drop the price of the current 80 gigabyte PlayStation 3 to $299 — effective immediately. Meanwhile, its 160-gigabyte model will drop from $499 to $399.
PS3 Slim UK Release Date: Friday 11 September Following on from our earlier news about the PS3 Slim being available for pre-order (even before Sony’s GamesCom conference) at Kmart, we now have a possible release date in the UK for Sony’s new console. According to TechCrunch, Sony will release the PS3 Slim in the UK on Friday September 11th. No word on a price yet, but it may be the same as the new £250 price tag that UK supermarket ASDA have just introduced. Hopefully this bit of news on the Slim will be the ‘last’ before Sony finally announce the thing officially. We’re not sure if we’re excited about it anymore. Kind of reminds me about the PSP Go and all the buildup to that at E3. At the moment, the date is only according to TechCrunch and their ‘trusty’ source, so until Sony make the statement very soon, stay on your toes.
Sony has officially announced the new slim PlayStation 3 and said it will be available in the first week of September worldwide. It will cost €299, $299 and 29,980 yen, and has a 120GB hard disk inside. That price will also apply to the original PS3 as of tomorrow. Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai, at gamescom for the announcement, said it was 32 per cent smaller, 36 per cent lighter and consumes 34 per cent less power.
