The actual date varies by up to 24 hours. Earth’s axis of rotation is not completely symmetrical, and it is not perpendicular to its flat orbital plane. Therefore, for six months, the northern hemisphere tips toward the sun and the other six months, the southern hemisphere tips toward the sun. The solstice-days (actually precise to the minute) are the times and point at which Earth’s tilt of rotational axis has maximum effect and the sun appears to not be moving. This year, that occured at 23:58 pm on June 20th, Universal Time, or 06:58 am on June 21st in the US-Central time zone where I am! Diagram of the Earth’s seasons as seen from the north.
