When is the implementation date of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) tamper-resistant prescription pad requirement?
All Medicaid prescriptions must be on tamper-resistant prescription pads by April 1, 2008. The pads must include a characteristic from at least 1 of the 3 required CMS categories at that time. On October 1, 2008, all Medicaid prescriptions must contain a characteristic from all 3 CMS categories. It is highly recommended that providers implement all 3 characteristic categories on or by April 1, 2008, to avoid additional implementation steps by October. Where can providers obtain tamper-resistant prescription pads that comply with Medicaid requirements? Providers are encouraged to work with their current vendors to incorporate the tamper-resistant features required by the CMS. The following Web sites list vendors that comply with the requirements of states that already require tamper-resistant prescription pads for some or all prescriptions. The tamper-resistant prescription requirements in these states meet or exceed all 3 CMS requirements. California: www.ag.ca.gov/bne/security_printer
