When is the best time to transplant snowdrop bulbs?
I have a growing colony of these early-blooming bulbs and a neighbor wants me to share them with her. — P., e-mail M.B.: Start digging! The best time to move and divide snowdrops (Galanthus) or the related bulbs of snowflake (Leucojum) is right after they finish blooming. The pure white dangling blossoms on these tiny bulbs are the first sign of spring in my garden and they seem to thrive everywhere — under the skirts of rhododendrons, in sunny rock gardens, tucked into poor soil or rich soil and in shaded or sunny spots. The more you dig and share them, the happier and less crowded your little colonies will be.
