At this time of the year the grass is growing but only slowly and the root systems of grasses get chance to develop well so that come spring when growth begins vigorously the grass is well established. A mixture of sieved soil and sharp sand with some grass seed blended in is ideal, 50:50 sand and soil is just fine. You might also dress your lawn with a general fertiliser to nourish it or a compound weed and feed in spring.
