When is the best time to move plants.?
Autumn is the best time. A small plant with a good big root ball can sometimes be moved successfully in summer but by the time you have tried to see if its successful it may be too late! If you must do it dig the hole you are going to move it to first. Water the plant, the day before if you think about it. Dig round it some distance away, from every side, as gently as you can, trying not to break any roots. Lift it gently onto the spade and transfer to the new hole. Fill the new hole with water and ease soil around the plant to fill the gap round it. Give it shade – if necessary invert a large plant pot over it to help prevent any evaporation, and leave it for a couple of days. Have a look and keep it watered. When the leaves have stopped drooping remove the shade but still protect it in the heat of the day until it is established.
