When is the best time to hire a birth or postpartum doula?
The sooner, the better! Ideally, you will have an initial consultation with your prospective birth doula during your sixth or seventh month (or earlier, if you prefer!). This will give you plenty of time to develop a comfortable relationship with all the members of your birth team. Your postpartum doula may be hired prior to your baby’s birth or afterwards, whatever you are most comfortable with. Many women prefer to have the initial consultation during their pregnancy when they have more time and energy.
