When is the best time to cut firewood?

0

You want to cut firewood before the sap runs, i.e. when it’s cold. The drier the wood is, the more BTU’s you’ll actually get out of it when it burns. As far as I know, the phase of the moon has nothing to do with it. If you can’t cut during the winter or early spring, or can’t do it exclusively then, you can cut green wood. If you fell a tree with leaves, wait for the leaves to become crisp before further chopping into firewood. This is a good indicator that a lot of moisture has left the wood. You’ll still want to season the wood before burning though. Remember, the smaller you cut the pieces (into stove lengths for instance), the quicker it will dry.
