In the UK budget airlines like EasyJet, Ryan Air, and Jet2 operate their system, as I understand it, based on tickets sold on the flight. This means the earlier you buy the ticket the cheaper it is, generally speaking. Major carriers like BA, Virgin, and BMI tend to operate differently. They will offer the ability to purchase up to almost a year in advance but they are rarely the cheapest at that point. Normally tickets are the cheapest when they are bought for travel that departs on a Monday – Thursday, length of stay is at least 7 days, and your arrival city. If your arrival city is international, outside of the EU, then you may find the cheapest about 8 – 12 weeks in advance and if it is EU / UK you might be able to get cheap tickets up to 4 weeks before departure date.
