Surgery for a torn or ruptured ACL is usually not preformed unless your joint has a severe amount of instability or you require the use of your ACL in order to participate in some sports-related activity. If this is the case your surgeon may recommend an ACL reconstruction surgery in order to heal your ACL. A reconstructive surgery is often required because it is much more difficult to repair a torn ACL than it is to reconstruct the ACL with other tendon tissues. During this procedure your ACL will be repaired with tendon tissue from your patellar or hamstring tendons, or an allograft (donor tissue).
