When is Ramadan in the Muslim calendar?

The lunar month is either 29 or 30 days long. Never longer or shorter. The year has 12 months. There are no leap year adjustments. So the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar based year of the Gregorian calendar. This is year 1428 on the Hijri (Islamic) calendar and Ramadan started on 13 September this year and ended on 13 October. The next one is predicted to start on 2 September 2008. However, by tradition Muslims base the start and end of the month not on predicted births of the new moon but on actual sightings of the crescent. So the actual starts of the months you see on lunar calendars are subject to sightings of the moon.
