WHEN IS MARDI GRAS?
Mardi Gras Day is always the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. Since Easter Sunday is never on the same Sunday of any given calendar year, Mardi Gras is never on the same Tuesday of any given calendar year. With that said, the nightly parades actually begin two weekends prior to Mardi Gras day. On that first weekend, visitors can experience the excitement of a Mardi Gras parade without the large crowds that the second (much bigger weekend) brings. Plus hotel rates are much lower with no minimum night stay requirements. However, the more popular weekend is the one just prior to Fat Tuesday because of the mega parades such as Endymion, Bacchus, Orpheus and, of course, Rex and Zulu. Mardi Gras Day in 2008 falls on Tuesday, February 5 (much earlier than usual). A list of dates for years to come can be found on the link for future dates.
