State finals for the 28th annual Colgate Country Showdown — a contest won in past years by then-unknowns Garth Brooks, Martina McBride and Brad Paisley, among others — will be a highlight of this year’s Sandwich Fair, organizers say. Nine Illinois finalists will compete for a $1,000 prize and the chance to land a Nashville recording contract at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, the opening day of the five-day fair held on the DeKalb County fairgrounds in Sandwich. “We’re really excited about it,” fair Vice President Larry Dannewitz said of the contest, which is described by organizers as “America’s largest country music talent search.” “We were looking for something we could offer for free to our patrons. The 122nd Sandwich Fair has scheduled a lot of entertainment for its five-day run starting today. It kicks off its grandstand shows at 7:30 p.m. tonight with free admission to the Illinois State Final of the Colgate Country Music Showdown talent search. The power of engines starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday with truck pulls. Tractor pulls are at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 for reserved and track seats, and $10 for the upper grandstand. Lonestar will deliver its country music starting at 8 p.m. Friday.
