When is it time to replace a mattress and box spring set?
To Questions The mattress industry now recommends that you replace your mattress set every 5-7 years. For a very long time, their recommendation was to replace your mattress every 8-10 years. It is difficult to say what is the more accurate guideline because the life of a mattress is influenced by several things: the quality of the materials used in the product, whether a mattress is padded on one side or two, the weight of the person(s) sleeping on the mattress, whether a box spring is used and the box spring’s construction (e.g. working modules or straight wire foundation). Also, unrelated to durability, comfort preferences can change over time so you may sleep better on a harder or softer padded mattress after a few years.
