When is it safe to plant annuals in North Georgia?
For your area the time would be the weekend before or of Mother’s Day. Make sure you buy healthy stock. If you are planning on starting from seeds begin that process now! Plant them in the soil when they are truly developed and hardy. Use this time to prepare you soil. Get rid of weeds and add your moss or Bone Meal as needed. If you can, rototill the garden with the needed materials along with a basic granular 10-10-10 with mineral fertilizer. This is cheap and put into the soil will help you greatly. Also purchase your mulch and weed control at this time. If you can not rototill, turn the soil with a shovel and use a hard rake to make the soil granular. Add the additions after this labor. Plant to your hearts content on/at Mother’s Day. Mulch the beds with a minimum of 2″ of a Shredded Hardwood Mulch. This will turn into topsoil within three years!
