When is it okay to report noise ordinance?
You are always welcome to call the police if you feel a law is being violated. However, this may be a short term solution to a long term problem. This may sound crazy, but perhaps they genuinely do not know how loud their music is. You should speak with them in person, and let them know how loud the music (very) is and why it bothers you (can’t hear your own music). If they insist that they have a reason for playing their music loud (perhaps they are musicians), they establish reasonable times when they can be loud (like when you are not home), and other times when you need quiet. Do not threaten to call the police or the landlord, as they will go on the offensive and not be as receptive to the rest of your message. After your meeting, see if they follow the terms of your agreement. If not, then by all means, call the police every time they break the law. Note: I write “break the law” because I do not know the standard for noise violations. Call the non-emergency police number and ask
you don’t call the police for that, you contact your local council or equivilent, and speak to the eviromental dept, speak with them and they will come over to yours and do a report, if its bad enough they will install a desibell ( spelt wrong) meter if, the noise exceeds their specifed limit a few times a week they will be issued a warning to stop if they don’t they will be evicted or face fines and court etc,,, the cops will only ask them to turn it down thats if they even come out at all,, hope this helps.
