When is it cheapest to buy train tickets?

If you are in the UK and intending to go a longish distance it is worth looking now. Ticket information is available on either your local train operating company’s website, National Rail Enquiries website or on the trainline.com (it doesn’t matter which one you pick, the information all comes from the same computer). There may be advance deal, or you might find two singles (one each way) are cheaper. If you are going a relatively short distance, then you can get an Off Peak Ticket on the day. Trains operators are not like plane operators, selling cheap tickets at the last moment to fill the seat. The cheapest tickets get sold early.
