According to Michael Arrington on TechCrunch Google is set to announce a new music service for the U.S. market. Multiple sources are claiming Google has been stockpiling content from the major music publishers over the past few months in preparation for an announcement and launch. Specific details are pretty sparse right now, but the name “Google Audio” has been mentioned. Whether this is a free streaming music service or paid-for download service is not known and we can only look to Google’s past music ventures to hazard a guess. Last year Google teamed up with Top100.cn to start offering advertising with music downloads in China. Then earlier this year the search giant launched a free music service in China which was supported by advertising. The key thing about that service is Google managed to get Sony, Warner, EMI, and Universal on board and provide 350,000 tracks initially; increasing to 1.1 million by the end of this year.
