When is a living will and health care proxy considered valid?
While it may differ in some states, advance directives are valid upon your signature (as a competent adult), and in the presence of two (2) qualified adult witnesses who are personally known to you (they must also sign, as witnesses). In most cases, a family member or relative is not an acceptable witness, nor is the person(s) you designate as a health care agent.
