WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO FIND AN ADVISOR FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE HONORS PROJECTS?
Sophomore year is a good time to look around. You want to have at least a year to do your project, and if you start as a sophomore then you can prepare yourself with courses and reading as well. If you are a more advanced Freshman, then starting even then would be okay. (E.g., one of our Freshman had been programming in C++ for 5 years.) • CAN WORK DONE IN INDUSTRY OR IN ANOTHER DEPARTMENT COUNT AS A COMPUTER SCIENCE HONORS PROJECT? In all unusual cases we are pretty flexible except that we insist on evidence of intellectual content in the area of computer science. A student working in another department may choose an advisor from that department with whom they are working on an honors project. At the end of the semester, the honors director(s) will confirm with that professor that the student has fulfilled the requirements of a computer science honors project. A student who decides to work on his/her own must still find a CS faculty advisor; that person may be less involved than usual
