when i stop paying my credit cards, do i notify creditors that im planning to file?
It is up to you and your lawyer about how to handle this. I usually just tell my clients to stop paying on the credit cards and when they receive a collection call, to refer the collector to me. That usually gets the client out of receiving calls from that creditor, at least for a while. If no bankruptcy if filed within a short time thereafter, the calls could start again. Creditors tend not to believe customers who say they are filing bankruptcy, because some of them never file. Hearing that a bankruptcy filing is imminent from a bankruptcy lawyer who says he or she is representing the client tends to give the statement that the customer/client is filing bankruptcy more credibility. The best answer is probably to get the bankruptcy filed as quickly as possible (assuming you have made the informed decision that filing is in your best interests).
