When I am viewing a message and click the next message arrow, why does GopherMail go to a previous message instead of the next and vice versa?

It depends on the way you last sorted your mailbox’s index. If you chose a reverse sort order, then viewed a message, and then clicked the next message arrow button, the next message would follow through with your sort order (reverse).
