If female patients have to undergo surgery at the time they are having their period they are automatically assessed pre-op and if they have their period then they are advised to use a towel that way nursing staff are aware and can deal with the patients hygiene needs as routine.If its an emergency the tampon would be removed in A and E and replaced with a towel as and when needed,as an Auxiliary Nurse for 20years and now a Student Nurse I have come across this problem a few times the patient is embarrassed bu we as nursing staff try to put the patient at ease and deal with the patients needs,hope this answers your question.
