When Hamlet was written who was the english monarch + significance to Hamlet.?
Elizabeth I died in March 1603, just after Hamlet was first performed (Summer 1602). She had a terrible fear of being overthrown and in fact scenes in other Shakespearean plays that showed monarchs being overthrown were not allowed to be shown during her lifetime. Also at the time of writing the subject of her successor was a very hot topic – she was unmarried and childless so people were worried about what would happen next. In fact her successor James I had to be sent for secretly in the middle of the night in order to ensure his succession. I’m sure you can see how these ideas play out in the play: fear of overthrown/assassinated monarch, wrong person on the throne, country fails as a result (sickness in Denmark). I hope this helps.
