When filming, how much footage actually gets used?
In professional filmmaking, there is a well known rule called the 9 to 1 ratio: meaning, on average, for every 9 minutes of footage, only one minute can actually be used. When filming kung fu films, the number gap is even farther, considering that because visuals are so action intensive and the actors are more prone to making mistakes and getting physically injured. This is a rough estimate, but for about every 7 to 10 minutes spent preparing the shot and improving the shot one take after another, there are only seconds of usable footage in the end.
