When ferrets get excited, do they let off some type of smell or gas?

OH yeah. Ferrets are mustilids, a “cousin” to the skunk. This group of animals are famous for their well developed anal glands. Many pet ferrets have had their glands removed; ask the person / store you got yours from if this has been done to your pet. If not you might want to think about it! Also, neutering is a good idea, essential if your pet is female. If she doesn’t breed she will die! And unless you have a separate building or you really like that odor (breeding ferrets make alot of it) you don’t want to breed these guys, cute as they are. Removing the glands won’t make them totally scent free (they have lesser scent glands other areas), but regular bathing will make them very socially acceptable in most informal situations.
