The predictive text is a feature built into many new handsets called T9. T9 is designed to make it easier to input words but it can be a bit confusing at first. When you are entering a word such as “test”, you would enter “8378” with each number only being pressed once. T9 will automatically recognize that you are trying to enter the word “test”. On older phones you would have to type 8 for T, then 33 for E, 7777 for S and 8 again for T. As you can see, with T9 you only have to enter 4 numbers to get the same word so it is much much faster. If you do not want to use T9, select the menu button when you are in a text field and switch from “Word” to “Alpha”.
