When employing the Usage Assignment Approach, how are usage periods chosen?
As noted above, one variation of the Usage Assignment Approach is to permanently assign specific dates to particular owners. Inevitably, certain usage dates are more desirable than others because of seasonal climate, school vacations, local events and other factors, and these differences should be taken into consideration when allocating price. It is important to remember that there is no particular advantage to allocating things equally, particularly when such an allocation would lead to unfair results. Co-owner groups employing the Usage Assignment Approach without permanently assigned usage dates need to establish a fair and predictable system for determining when each owner will be able to use his/her days, weeks or months. It is important that each of the co-owners have the ability to plan vacations well in advance.
